During June 2008, U.S. Marine Corps F18's of the RED DEVILS squadron are recovered aboard the U.S.S. Nimitz at sea between Hawaii and San Diego.

Major Simon M. Doran was born in Liverpool, England. He has served with VMFA-251, Navy Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun), VMFA-232. He has flown the T-34, T-2C, AJ4, F-18 and F-16 aircraft. With over 3,000 hours, Major Doran has flown combat missions in support of Operation Southern Watch and Enduring Freedom with VMFA-251. He has also flown combat missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom with VMFA-232. (Over 70 missions total) He was an Instructor at the Navy Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun). Decorations include Air Medal (single mission) and 6 Strike Flight Awards.
Major Eddy I. Hansen was born in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. He has served with VMFA-232, HMLA-267 and HMM-268. Types flown are T-34, T4-57, T-45, AH-1W, F/A-18. As an AH-1W Super Cobra pilot, Major Hansen flew combat missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. As an F-18 Hornet pilot, he flew combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan from USS Nimitz (CVN-68) in 2007. In total, he conducted 5 deployments and over 2,000 hours. He holds the Air Medal (3) and Navy Com. Number of missions is more than 50.
Major Travis S. Kelley is originally from Lafayette, Indiana. He trained at Pensacola, Florida and Kingsville, Texas. He did two cruises on the USS Constellation (CV-64) VMFA-323 (Death Rattlers) and flew combat missions over Iraq in support of Operation Southern watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Major Kelley then did an Instructor Tour in Miramar with VMFAT-101 (Sharpshooters). After that he joined VMFA-232 (Red Devils) as Operations Officer and did a west Pacific cruise aboard the USS Nimitz (CVN-68). He has flown the T-34C, T-45A, F/A-18A and D’s and has 2,300 hours and over 50 missions. Decorations include Air Medal (3) with Combat V, and Navy Commendation Medal (2) with Combat V.
Captain Thomas M. Downing is originally from Bristol, Pennsylvania. He has served in VF-14, VFA-125, VFA-146 and VFA-136. He was twice a Top Gun Instructor and was Commanding Officer of Top Gun. Captain Downing has flown the following types: T-2, A-4 Skyhawk, F-14, F-18 and F-16. He was a Department Head in VFA-146 aboard USS Nimitz. He has numerous awards and other achievements. His aircraft is depicted in Red Devils Return when he was CAG aboard USS Nimitz (CVN-68).
Lt. Colonel Hunter Hobson was born in Waco, Texas. He flew in combat missions over two decades in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. He has over 60 missions under his belt. Lt. Colonel Hobson accumulated over 3,000 flight hours in tactical aircraft and has over 750 carrier arrested landings to his credit. He was Commanding Officer of VMFA-232 Red Devils during Nimitz cruise depicted in this painting. He has flown the T-34, T-2C, TA-4J, F/A-18A and C models. He has served with VMFA-312, VMFA-323, Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron (Blue Angels), 5th Marine Regiment, VMFA-323 and VMFA-232. Decorations include Meritorious Service Medal (3) Air Medal (3) Navy Comm, Navy Achievement Medal and Combat Action Ribbon.
